The Patriots Defense Is Terrible, And It’s Not Getting Any Better

After four weeks of football, one thing is clear: The New England Patriots defense is terrible. Initially chalked up to the combined effects of a traditionally slow start and the absence of defensive captain and playmaker Dont’a Hightower, the real problems with New England’s defense run much deeper. Granted Hightower just returned from a knee injury and played only half the defensive snaps against the Carolina Panthers in Week 4, his squad looked bad. So bad, in fact, that it made a struggling Cam Newton look like his 2015 MVP self as he threw for three scores and ran for one more.

Of course, the porous Patriots defense makes Tom Brady look like the erstwhile MVP winner he is, too, because New England would be 0-4 if not for Brady’s near-constant heroics on the offensive end. But if New England’s D doesn’t shape up soon, no amount of historic Brady two-minute drills can overcome consistent late-game deficits. After all, Brady forced a tie with Carolina with just a couple minutes left, and his defense imploded as usual.

Yes, it’s early in the season, but as long as the Patriots defense is as terrible as it is right now, there’s no reason to choose New England as a favorite on any board going forward for sports betting in Massachusetts. They’ve got to right things on the wrong side of the ball before any bettor should give the club credence as their de facto Super Bowl pick. And bettors are bailing. The Patriots were +350 to win the Super Bowl this past Saturday. Just a day later, and they’re up to +450.
